Charli found his answer believable, her and Mara had done that themselves before they had found Stoneham.
Remembering that she had soup sitting on her stove, she jumped to her feet and ran into her kitchen. Not seeing any flames or black smoke she breathed a sigh of relief. Charli wasn't feeling hungry herself so she dumped the soup into a bowl, grabbed a spoon then headed back out to dining room.
"Here you go" Charli said putting the soup in front of him.
Charli did remember Matthias telling her that if she was serious about trying to find Mara, to come and ask him. It had been a few weeks and she was ready to try again.
"So since I have you here, I need to ask for some advice on how to get into Harrington" Charli said.

Matthias snatched up the spoon and began to devour the soup. He hadn’t eaten all day, plus it was warm and tasty and it filled his mouth, giving him time to think before consenting to Charli’s request. Getting her to Harrington wouldn’t be a problem. It was saving her sister that seemed impossible. Werewolves were possessive with their captured faeries, like the creatures were diamonds or gold. You couldn’t just walk into a house and take their property. That, and taking Charli into Harrington was a risk, especially if Charli wasn’t sure if her sister was alive or not. He decided to tell her so.
“Look, Charli…” Matthias swallowed the last of the soup in his mouth and used his arm to wipe his mouth. “First things first, you need to be certain that your sister is in Harrington before you go there looking for her. I’ll help you as much as I can, but we have to approach this sensibly. Do you have proof she’s alive?” It was a hard question. Hopefully it wouldn’t hit a soft spot in the girl.

Charli watched Matthias devour the soup, it must have been awhile since he had ate last. The soup wasn't that good, it was just cheap stuff from a can. She was happy to help though, unlike her fairie counterparts she wasn't against getting involved in other people's problems.
His question did hit her hard but she was able to keep calm. She hadn't heard anything from her sister in months, but she was sure that she was still alive.
"She's alive and in Harrington. She sent me a letter three months ago and it was postmarked from Harrington. No address of course but it for sure came from the city" Charli explained. The letter was still sitting on her nightstand, looking at her sister's pretty cursive writing made her feel a little better. Like a part of her was still there.
"It's been awhile since I've heard from her. but if she died...I would know..." Charli said lamely. She just felt like if Mara died, she would too. In her heart she knew her sister was very much still alive.

Charli was certain. She felt it. Well that was just great. Feelings were now proof? Matthias sighed and leaned back in his chair, propping his head with his hands.
“That isn’t good enough. A letter from three months ago isn’t good enough. Your feelings…” though I know how you feel, he thought, “are not good enough.” Matthias closed his mouth in a firm line. He would not be moved. Anything else she might say on the subject would most likely be a lie. That meant there was only one thing to do.
“We’re gonna have to get into Harrington and find Mara first. Then we can return to Stoneham and start planning a rescue mission.” He was digging a hole.

Charli sighed to herself and dropped her head down into her arms on the table. There was no way of explaining to him how she knew, actually she wasn't sure herself if she knew that she was still alive. A feeling didn't seem enough to go off of. Charli just couldn't admit to herself that her sister may be dead right now.
At the suggestion that they first go into Harrington and try to find Mara, Charli lifted her head feeling hopeful. That was what she had been hoping to hear.
"Really? You're going to help me?" Charli said not able to hide the happiness in her voice.

Matthias nodded slowly, thoughtfully, as if he weren't certain himself of the answer he was giving. He lifted a nimble finger in the air.
"On one condition. You have to stick with me." He glanced out her window, as if suddenly suspicious. "I don't mean here in fairie town, and I don't mean only physically. When we get to Harrington you probably aren't going to want to follow any random werewolf into the shadows, but I can never be certain..." with women, he wanted to say. It was ridiculous how easily some of them could fall in the presence of a man. "No listening to others and what they might tell you. No disobeying me or doing something rash. Both of our lives will be put on the line, and frankly I'm not going to lose mine because you didn't stick with me.
"So? Do we have a deal?" Matthias raised his eyebrows at the girl. He'd spoken and not realized completely what he'd said. The back of his mind pointed out that he had called Stoneham fairie town, but he hope she wouldn't have picked up on that.

Charli was more than happy to oblige to his conditions. Her last encounter with a werewolf had been a terrifying one, she had hoped that she would never have to go through again.
"Don't worry, I don't plan on wondering away. The last time I saw a werewolf they were dragging away my mom. I am terrified of them" Charli said solemnly.
It may have looked to Matthias that she wasn't scared because of her decision to go off into Harrington alone, week earlier. Charli had no idea what had got into her, or how she was able to muster the courage to even think about it.
"We have a deal" Charli said relieved.

You should be. Matthias thought maliciously, imagining the fairies him and his father had hunted down together. They were so innocent and defenseless. Sometimes those attributes of theirs got to him. He would either break down, unable to continue, or he would scorn their weakness and disable them with more zeal than necessary. Vampires paid a high price for fairies.
“Good.” He clipped. “Now spit on it.” Matthias held out his hand.

Charli felt a chill as soon as she had mentioned her mother. Her father may have had it easy being killed right away, her poor mother could for all Charli knew be still alive. Somewhere out there, a slave to a werewolf. She hoped that she wouldn't be sitting in a similar situation in ten years wondering the same thing about her sister.
She looked down at Matthias's hand in horror. She looked up at him and hoped that he was joking. Seeing that he was not, Charli took his hand and shook it, sealing the deal.

“No no no.” Matthias said, taking her by the wrist and pulling his hand away. “You have to spit on your hand and shake. Normally I’d do it too but since you’re the only one promising something, you’re the only one who has to spit.” He tried to twist her wrist so that her palm faced up. Watching her intently he commanded, “Spit on it.”

This was one of the moments where Charli felt extremely out of touch with the outside world. She had never heard of having to spit in your hand to seal a deal. She wasn't a germaphobe but this grossed her out in a big way.
"Umm why do I have to do this?" Charli asked looking at him confused.

Matthias sighed loudly to let Charli know that she was giving him grief.
"It's a custom, okay? Just do it." He stared at the girl for a few loud seconds, and then drew his hands away, holding them up in a submissive manner. "Fine then, don't do it. But that seals it. I guess you don't want my help." Okay, so he was being manipulative. So what? Charli was being girly.

Sighing to herself, she spit in her hand and held it out. Charli didn't want him to think she was some kind of weak girly girl, even though essentially that was what she was.
She felt like at this point she was ready for anything. Looking out through the window and saw that it had stopped raining finally. Charli really wanted Matthias to tell her what the plan was so they could leave as soon as possible.
"What's the plan, I am ready to go" Charli said seriously.

Matthias slapped his hand into hers and gave her a nice shake before disengaging and wiping away her spit on his pants. Perhaps the action was childish but he felt like her spit had sealed the deal. There were so many way he could and would take advantage of this new…whatever it was.
“Woah woah woah, steady girl.” He patted down the air around him. “We aren’t just going to hop on a bike and take a joy ride over there. This takes planning. Training, even.” With a quick glance out the window and the realization that it had stopped raining, Matthias reconsidered, “Okay we’ll leave tonight. And the plan? The plan…” He scratched his chin for a long minute, narrowing his eyes thoughtfully.
“I’ll have to sleep on that.”

Charli wiped her own hands on her pants, to get the spit off. She would have to scrub her hands later, she didn't make a habit of spitting on herself and it grossed her out.
She smiled happily, finally she could take that important step towards saving her sister from the clutches of some evil werewolf. She got to her feet not sure exactly what to do with herself.
"Well I am going to go throw a bag together, thank you for helping me" Charli said sincerely.
